MA in Marriage and Family
Maryvale has worked closely with the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in Rome to develop a new pathway for the Open University-validated MA in Catholic Pastoral and Educational Studies. This pathway seeks to articulate an ‘adequate anthropology’ through a study of God’s plan for the human person in marriage and family. In doing so, the pathway embraces a multidisciplinary approach through which both faith and reason are fully integrated. It will be of interest to priests, religious and others involved in marriage preparation/enrichment, pastoral care, family counselling, as well as qualified teachers such as those teaching RE or PSE, and professionals in youth ministry, chaplaincy, retreat work, family law, medicine and governmental bodies with responsibilities for marriage and family.
The pathway aims:
- to deepen student knowledge and understanding of the Catholic vision for marriage and family particularly as informed by the teaching of Pope John Paul II;
- to enable students to reflect critically on how to apply this knowledge and understanding in response to the needs and enrichment of marriage and family life within their own vocational and professional settings.
Modules studied focus on: Marriage and Sacred Scripture; Christian Anthropology; Moral Theology; Marriage as a Sacrament and State of Life; Marriage and Family in the Teaching of the Church; The Psychology of the Couple and Family; The Contemporary Socio-Political Context of the Family; John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.
Courses commence Jan 2011
